Why Battery Cleaning Matters

The Science Behind Battery Grime & Current Loss

Industrial settings are inherently dirty, but this problem is dramatically magnified on battery surfaces. During operation, especially during the final stages of charging, batteries release gas, which leaves behind a thin, acidic film of moisture. This film acts like a magnet, immediately attracting airborne dirt, dust, and oil from the environment. This combination of acid residue and industrial grime forms a corrosive layer across the top of the battery, creating a major electrical problem: current leakage.

Grime's Impact on Productivity & Power

The layer of acidic grime allows electricity to "track" across the battery top as it seeks the easiest path to ground, often the steel battery case. This tracking represents a continuous drain of power, which reduces battery runtime and necessitates more frequent battery changes, directly hindering forklift productivity. The constant, poor electrical connection at the battery case exacerbates the issue by causing the buildup of a highly corrosive, white, and yellow substance around the perimeter of the case.

The Cost of Untreated Corrosion

If this corrosion is left untreated, the consequences are severe for the battery's lifespan and performance. The corrosive material expands, which can physically crush the cell walls inside the battery and rapidly corrode the steel case itself, leading to premature failure. More immediately, this grime robs the battery of usable power, causing individual cells to become highly uneven in output. Regular cleaning and neutralisation, as discussed previously, are therefore essential maintenance steps that protect both personnel and the investment in the battery fleet.

Discover the Right Fit For Your Application

7 Clean Wipes

7 Clean combines a high-grade degreaser with a colour-changing neutraliser so that it can neutralise and decrease even the toughest deposits on batteries and their ancillary equipment, and will even indicate the presence of the acid with its pH colour indicators.

SpillPro Advanced Spill Absorbing Powder

SpillPro is an absorbent powder that can be used on both acids and oils. Simply pour the powder on any spill, and brush it in. After a couple of minutes, you can sweep it away, leaving the floor clear of the spillage.
